Hi,

I know that picture quality must be one of the most frequently asked
questions. But... I can't seem to fix this. Basically the picture is not as
crisp as compared to the picture straight out of my DirecTV receiver. When I
switch between video inputs on the tv (i.e. s-video and coax) there's a
noticeable difference. The picture with mythtv is good enough, but it's
certainly not as crisp as it could be.

I don't believe it's a video out problem or an ivtv recording problem
because watching DVDs through mplayer looks perfect and watching .nuv files
through mplayer looks better than mythtv's playback.

These are the things I've tried (all of which lead to basically the same
picture quality)

* Increased recording bit rates
* Tried recording with DVD and MPEG-PS
* Fiddled with the recording contrast/brightness/color
* Fiddled with XV playback contrast/brightness/color
* Tried setting overscan to 250 and flicker filter to 1
* Fiddled with the nvidia-settings saturation
* Recompiled with XvMC and OpenGL enabled
* Enabled XvMC and used Bob deinterlacing
* Enabled "use video as timebase"
* Set RenderAccel="1" in my xorg.conf
* Tried with about 3 different nvidia drivers up to version 6629

The result of all of this experimentation is that, aside from a few
differences, the picture quality is never as crisp as real tv.

I'm running Fedora Core 3, using the S-video out of a geforce mx440, and
recording with a PVR-250.

I know I've seen posts regarding picture crispness. For instance, this post:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/73263 seems to be
discussing the same thing. But in that post, people seem to basically say
that they can get good results if they use a PVR-350 output, a VGA-TV
converter, etc.

Could anyone comment on what I'm missing, if anything. As I said before, the
picture quality is good enough, but it's just not as crisp as standard tv.
It's as though pixels are blended together or something, which removes
crispness.

Anyway, any help is appreciated. Otherwise, I'll just continue to watch my
less-crisp recordings.

Thanks,

Dan.
