Jumping in on a tangent here, but I am running 32 bit FC4 installation on an EM64T processor for a couple of reasons.  First of all, I couldn't my x86_64 install CDs to  work.  It took me about 72 hours in front of the computer to get everything installed.  I believe the problems were due to bad memory (and a incompatible power button header on the MB, and a lack of thermal grease between processor and heatsink), but the install I finally got to work was 32 bit.

Anyhow, I now have my myth box up and running with an smp kernel on a P4 630+.  Jarod suggests in FC4 install guide that x86_64 is less stable than 32bit, and I have not yet heard any potential benefits of using x86_64 linux for a myth box.

So then, might I see significantly faster transcode times were I  to switch to a 64  bit installation?  The only transcoding I am interested in is from DVD to mpeg4, if that somehow makes a difference.

After going through that nightmare

I've run 64-bit since my first DEC 21064 (aka "alpha") machine.
Frustrating at times, but fun, and really great for video transcoding
work.

I've found Gentoo's support for 64-bit hardware to be quite good,
it's only the proprietary stuff (Flash?) that still gives trouble at
times.
