A dear friend who does family and drug & alcohol counseling once advised us:
Any action that is acknowledged will continue.. good bad or 
otherwise, acknowledge the action and it will continue..
This thought process works with both children and adults in almost 
every case you can think of
I have had ONLY one person that it backfired.. ignore her bad 
behavior and she just got worse.. but eventually she did just go away :)

My own personal mantra will add: responding opens the door for a 
rebuttal.. in other words.. just don't answer.. anything you answer 
with just is an open invitation to continue the discussion/argument
