The article is good, and being in the former service industry myself,
I am always a good tipper when tipping is required, including nail &
hair salons. I usually overtip if the service was good, meaning 20%
or more. I have always read and heard that Salon Owners were not to be
tipped, because they not only own the salon, but if they have booth
renters, they also count that rent as income, or something to that
effect, plus any profit from the retail items sold. But I can never
tell who the actual owner of some places is, so I have never put that
policy to test. If you did raise your rates to cover tipping, I think
you would need to make it very clear to your clients that tips are
included in the fees you charge and are not accepted.

Not so with "tip jars". If I paid cash and have nothing but change I
may throw it in the jar rather than put it away. If it is a counter
service restaurant or counter establishment of any kind, the employees
are paid minimum wage or more to do the job they were hired to perform
and are not considered by the gov't as "tipped" employees that need to
declare their tips on their time cards or to the IRS; everything in
the jar is considered over & above their wages. Restaurant workers in
California have to declare their tips to their employer as part of
their timecards; they are then taxed on what they declare and it is
taken out of their paychecks for them.

As far as going to Massage Envy like the writer of the article - never
again. I've been there twice, once on my own for their "special" and
again with a gift certificate. Their one hour massage is actually
only 30-40 minutes after the therapist sits down and talks to you
first about your workout routine, trouble spots, what kind of massage
you prefer and what kind of stress you've been having what brought you
there today, and on and on and on. I do not want to talk when I get a
massage, I'm there to relax, not get interrogated. And it wasn't
even that good.
