Wow Nicole that sounds like a nightmare of a situation.

There is no licensing in Ontario either. If you have a business card that
says you are a nail tech you can purchase product from Cosmoprof here. Or
do what the rest of us do, order it online. I don't think we have more NSS
shops as a result of this though. I've travelled extensively and I think we
have about the same amount and possibly less than places I've seen in the
States.

In terms of inspection, the local boards of health take care of that at
their leisure. Many home-based personal services businesses never get
inspected (mine does) but there is nothing forcing anyone operating out of
their home to open their doors to an inspector. Again, it comes down to $$$
and the fact that there are not enough inspectors to go around. We have a
pass/fail inspection for any business offering food services and I wish they
had this for personal services businesses. I asked my inspector about that
when she was here in January and she said that would never happen in
Ontario. She is on 'our' side for sure, but she said the majority of
customers just don't appear to care. She told me about going into a local
NSS and having the customers who were there at the time yell at her for
being 'mean'. She told them she was only trying to protect them and they
just yelled at her more. I would not want that job.

The majority of the techs I know personally from Ontario are like me -
honest, hard working, possess high standards of workmanship and cleanliness,
and work to continually educate themselves, even though none of that is
required to be a nail tech here. Sad isn't it.

Various folks have tried over the years, to set up associations that
could standardize the industry. The problem is us. No one really wants
to get involved or do the work required. Everyone is either too busy
or likes things the way they are. As it is, we've already seen one
province (BC) become DE-regulated. A group in Nova Scotia tried to
pull the same stunt and did not get away with it, thankfully.

Unfortunately, one of the problems is how the regulation is put
forward. Here in Manitoba, it seems like regulation was done to
protect those of us with experience from up and coming competition
because it is high-nigh impossible to get an apprenticeship under the
current legislation. Most of my students will leave the industry in a
year or so because they will never get the hours that they need. The
ones who don't have anyone or anything tying them to here will pack up
and go to Alberta or Ontario where there is no regulation and they can
work for themselves.

Eventually the Manitoba nail techs and estheticians are going to
encounter the same problem that Manitoba electrologists have: no one
will be entering the industry because the old guard regulated it so
damned well that no one can. Electrologists in this province are dying
and retiring with no one to replace them because they regulated
themselves out of successors:D

It's ironic because so much focus is put on apprenticeship hours but
then nothing on maintaining trades training, or on salon standards -
nothing!! They still want your money every two years for that license,
though:P

- to get certified here. We need to get an organizaiton going in Canada to
set up regulations consistent in each province....what do you all think?
