Hey guys! Ok, bear with me, I've been MIA for nearly two weeks and no, I have NOT taken the time to thoroughly read each and every post on this subject, so I'm hoping I don't go way off base here or repeat something that's been brought up. There's a difference between energy consumption (ie, paying for using 300 watts for your 3 100w lightbulbs in your living room,) energy output (ie, how many of those watts actually get converted to light energy,) and light output-- (ie, "candlepower" or often expressed in "lumens.") This whole conversation has had me up to my eyeballs in research on the subject, and I'm not pretending that I have it figured out, but I've learned an awful lot about the way electricity works, the way light works and the way we use one to create the other. Another issue at hand here is that we're not just talking about light, we're talking about UV light. And not JUST UV light, but specific wavelengths of UV light. But essentially, just because you are using 36 watts of energy to power 4 9W UV lightbulbs, doesn't mean that you're putting out 36 watts of light-- mostly because light isn't really measured in wattage. So trying to convert like that is sort of moot anyway. But also, there's that whole law of dimishing returns which means that you can't put out more energy than the appliance uses. (Trust me, I've watched a lot of Bill Nye the Science Guy!) Then there's this whole light thing; particles, waves, photons, photon packs-- visible light vs UV light. AND just when you think you *get* it-- there's understanding the difference between incandescent lightbulbs vs flourescent lightbulbs and the way each type of lightbulb "creates" light, what type of light they emit, and how we convert the type of light they emit to the type of light we want to use. So that is my long, exasperated way of pointing out that this is a flawed analogy to begin with.
