Hi Sherri,

Thanks for the excellent tutorial! Those are all great suggestions and I will
start using them! This happend to be the spa owners AUNT! Who is in town for
a visit. No chance of getting her in at a regular schedule. (The spa owner is
83, YOU do the math! lol!) So.. spa owner booked the aunts appt. with me, I
did not get a chance to talk to her on the phone. I often don't get a chance
to "pre-screen" the clients because the spa books the pedicures for me. So...
ya take what ya get!

I do like the "foot exam" part of your pedicure.. I always tell them what I
am seeing, although this has come back to bite me because some people are
embarrassed by their feet and take it as a critisism when I tell them what I
see. I do it in a kind, professional manner, but I can tell they just don't
WANT me to notice just HOW bad their feet ARE! lol!

Ya just can't win! I do prefer that method though, because if I tell them
about a cracked nail, or callous, or cut, or something.. they won't be coming
back telling me that I caused it! I always ask them "Do you have any concerns
about your feet?" as soon as I start running the water for the footbath.
Lets them get that right upfront about any conditions they have or areas they
are concerned about. :-)

What foot file do you send them home with? What "heavy duty heel cream" do
you use? Brand of callous remover? I am seriously so new at this, I'm trying
to figure out what works best without buying dozens of brands to try them all!
What is a nickle file??? Do I need to get an e-file for the pedicure room? It
would be difficult to keep moving my unit from the front of the spa where I do
fingernails, to the back room of the spa where we do pedicures. She can't
reach her feet anymore, and is just recovering from a shoulder injury from a
fall, so home care is out of the question.
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions! I appreciate it SO MUCH!
Pam

Pam,
That is exactly why I ask questions when they call to book their appointment.

I ask how long since last pedi, does s/he have a lot of calluses or cracked
heels, does s/he run or play other sports, is s/he diabetic or other medical
conditions, etc.

I book 1 1/2 hrs for all pedis just in case ;-)

When s/he comes in I put on gloves and spray sanitizer on feet and thoroughly
examine them, pointing out what I'm seeing as I go. I tell them if they have
excessive cuticle, fissures in the heel area, if the nails are overly thick,
location of calluses and corns etc.

Then, before I do anything else, I explain that I cannot repair the condition
of their feet in one appointment. I explain how often they need to come to
achieve the desired result. I tell them I can clean these up and make them
presentable today and then we can get you on a schedule to get the situation
under control. If they are really bad, I tell them I can skip the warm booties,
massage and other frou frou and work on your calluses and fissures, etc or I
can do the frou frou and just the normal callus work.

Then I recomment a callus removal treatment every 2-3 weeks until we get the
feet under control. This is NOT a pedi! No nail or cuticle detail, no polish,
no massage. Sanitize feet. Dry file with a nickle file or coarse sanding band
on my efile, apply callus eliminator, wrap in plastic, then warm dry towel for
about 5-10 minutes. Remove callus eliminatore with hot steamed towel, then dry
towel, then more filing with graduating grits of nickle files, or efile or
traditional foot files. Wipe feet with steamed towel and apply heavy duty heel
cream. Send em out the door with a foot file and heel cream. Tell them to dry
file first! Then after bath or shower file again and apply cream. Every single
day. Should take about 30-40 minutes and I charge $30. If they want a polish
change its $45 (cuz I use sog ).

HTH!
Sherri

Subject: NailTech:: Nightmare Callous Foot!!

Ok, Teks, I am gonna have nightmares on this one! Gawd! WHERE do I begin?
Older lady comes in for a pedi/mani tonight. Did the pedi first. I just
started doing pedicures in March, after doing nails for 28 years! lol! So..
pretty new to this ugly feet stuff! So... ONE foot isn't too bad, considering
her age and all.. not being mean here, but you know what I mean! Other foot?
Hmm.. looks like it belonged to another person! A wild mountain person who has
lived in the woods for the past 80 years or so! Wow! I asked her about it and
she said that she had polio in that leg, :-( aww... I felt so bad for her!
)and that she incurred the damage to her foot because it was numb and she
couldn't feel when her shoes didn't fit right! OMG! Wait.. I need another
drink before I continue...
Ok.. picture lets say... 3 quarters stacked up.. THAT is how big and how
high the callous was on the ball of her foot! OMG! Smaller one more toward
the little toe. I'd say about 3 dimes stacked up! (Bet you never think about
change the same way again either! Hey, if I am gonna get nightmares doing
these feet, I might as well drag the rest of you along too!) So.. I soak, use
foot scrub, apply callous remover, do cuticles and cut nails while the callous
remover works. A couple of the nails on that foot also seemed to have
callouses UNDER THEM! How the hell does this happen! How do you get a callous
UNDER your toenails? I have no idea.. keep working.. pretend I see this crap
all the time.. wait.. I need another drink...
Ok.. I sand, and scrape, and sand some more, then do the lotion/plastic
bag/warm spa bootie with heated booties.. and let her soak up that cream for
another 10 minutes. Remove all that, and sand and scrape more on the callous.
Gawd.. the callouses are from HELL I tell ya! I do the best I can, and tell
her that she is going to be a half inch shorter when she stands up because of
all the callous removal I did! She tells me that she has never had a pedicure
where they worked so hard getting the callous under control! (What the hell am
I DOING!? What the hell have the other techs been doing!?)
So.. what is the deal here!? Should I have been lazy and ignored it, as
other techs have done in the past? Is there something better (and faster!)
that I could have done to reduce it? I mean, I don't think I could have
ignored it, I am totally into being as picky with other clients nails and feet
and I am with mine! And there is no way I am gonna walk around with that sort
of affliction! HELP! I'm gonna be having nightmares about this one I tell ya!
