We can reduce/smooth callus. You don't want to remove completely. I have a
lot if these type clients. I have horrible heels and calluses. I have one on
the side of my big toe that looks like another toe if I let it go too long.
LOL. Seriously. And my heels have always been bad. They get real hard callus
that thickens very fast. If I let it go too long, it cracks and bleeds because
it is so hard. Callus remover products have come a long way in the last 20
years since the days all we had was a shaver. I occasionally go and get a pedi,
but u have to work on my heels and 2nd toe before I go. Most techs do not give
good pedis. I can't even tell a difference after I have had one (which is the
whole point in going).ithey give what I call a fru fru pedi. Which is why I
have many clients with feet like mine. And they are loyal and come in like
clockwork every 3-4 weeks for pedis year round. If you get them often enough,
it keeps it at bay.

Hmmm... When I have a client with a callus so big that it needs to be
reduced I send them to a podiatrist. I think that's out of my scope of what
I'm
qualified to do. IMO it's our job to moisturize the callus, keep it supple
to prevent cracking, but actual reduction should be performed by a doctor.
We don't have the training, unless you're a MNT, to know how much is enough
when it comes to removing callus, *especially* with someone who has
neuropathy.

Ok, Teks, I am gonna have nightmares on this one! Gawd! WHERE do I
begin? Older lady comes in for a pedi/mani tonight. Did the pedi first. I
just started doing pedicures in March, after doing nails for 28 years! lol!
So.. pretty new to this ugly feet stuff! So... ONE foot isn't too bad,
considering her age and all.. not being mean here, but you know what I mean!
Other foot? Hmm.. looks like it belonged to another person! A wild
mountain person who has lived in the woods for the past 80 years or so! Wow!
I
asked her about it and she said that she had polio in that leg, :-(
aww... I felt so bad for her! )and that she incurred the damage to her foot
because it was numb and she couldn't feel when her shoes didn't fit right!
OMG! Wait.. I need another drink before I continue...
Ok.. picture lets say... 3 quarters stacked up.. THAT is how big and
how high the callous was on the ball of her foot! OMG! Smaller one more
toward the little toe. I'd say about 3 dimes stacked up! (Bet you never
think about change the same way again either! Hey, if I am gonna get
nightmares doing these feet, I might as well drag the rest of you along too!)

So.. I soak, use foot scrub, apply callous remover, do cuticles and cut nails
while the callous remover works. A couple of the nails on that foot also
seemed to have callouses UNDER THEM! How the hell does this happen! How
do you get a callous UNDER your toenails? I have no idea.. keep working..
pretend I see this crap all the time.. wait.. I need another drink...
Ok.. I sand, and scrape, and sand some more, then do the lotion/plastic
bag/warm spa bootie with heated booties.. and let her soak up that cream
for another 10 minutes. Remove all that, and sand and scrape more on the
callous. Gawd.. the callouses are from HELL I tell ya! I do the best I can,
and tell her that she is going to be a half inch shorter when she stands
up because of all the callous removal I did! She tells me that she has never
had a pedicure where they worked so hard getting the callous under
control! (What the hell am I DOING!? What the hell have the other techs been
doing!?)
So.. what is the deal here!? Should I have been lazy and ignored it,
as other techs have done in the past? Is there something better (and
faster!) that I could have done to reduce it? I mean, I don't think I could
have
ignored it, I am totally into being as picky with other clients nails and
feet and I am with mine! And there is no way I am gonna walk around with
that sort of affliction! HELP! I'm gonna be having nightmares about this
one I tell ya!
