it is actually surprisingly easy to damage the matrix and people are really lucky it doesn't happen more often. Trimming the eponychium can break the seal and allow bacteria in, which can cause an infection and damage the matrix, also aggressively pushing back against the eponychium in the name of cuticle removal, file damage, etc.

Here is a nail a client who came me with this damaged nail yesterday at the salon. She believes it is curtesy of a "chop shop" where her nail enhancements were pried off. I was able to do an enhancement over it as it did not hurt and was a couple of years old.
