Bethanne, It's also very possible to cause lasting damage without feeling "pain". I used to play competitive Co-Ed Volleyball. Every season I'd get bruised big toe nails from jumping at the net. They never, ever hurt when it was happening. Once it was bruised, the nail separated from the nail bed and it was just a matter of time before I lost the nail. Luckily, I know what I'm doing and was skilled enough to replace it with some acrylic after it had grown out a bit.
She could have bumped her matrix (that part of her finger) just hard enough that she doesn't even recall doing it, and it could create a permanent ridge that splits as it grows out. Also, depending on her age, it could be the first of more ridges as time marches one. Christina, here at the office, has a ridge that always splits. No trama, it just developed one day. There just doesn't always have to be a blatant physical trauma to leave a lasting flaw in a nail. Kind Regards, Elaine T.
