Marsha,
All the SOG should allow penetration of oils down to the plate. The
chemistry of SOG makes them porous so they can be soaked off - it
does not matter if we are talking 5 or 40 minutes, they are NOT
impervious to acetone as traditional "hard" gels are.
I would think even with hard gels, oiling cuticles will allow a
certain amount of penetration of oils into the bed from whatever
growth area there is.
