The salon I was at before I moved into my own place did one. They
limited the appointments to 2 coupon people a day per stylist day when
booking them in (customers didn't know of course, and it wouldn't work
with online booking). They said pretty much everyone would say they
had a coupon when they called so that's how they were able to control
the 600 or so that were sold. They did put on there that it wasn't
available for nails as I didn't need a ton of new clients nor did I
want to do a service for 1/4 the price. Their major mistake was not
saying first time customers only! Some of their regulars bought the
coupons too (some up to 4 of them).

In the end, the stylists who had only half a book were fine with it
because they would push add on services, like conditioning treatments
and such. Some say they got 1-2 regulars that booked again so they
thought that was good. But the vast majority just wanted the deal.
It's something to try if you really need to fill your books fast. I'd
warn current clients to book before the coupon gets released so they
have their spot.
