The difference is that they are saying that Nail UV lamps specifically cause cancer. The observation that was made includes a woman that had exposure to a nail UV lamp less than 10 times. In addition the type of equipment noted in the observation was not determined. It might have been a fan with a regular bulb in it. It could have been a heat lamp without any UV at all. The report assumes it was a UV lamp. The observation also says that nail UV lamps are akin to tanning beds. There are several other inaccuracies in the observation. Out of the hundreds of thousands of patients with skin cancer on their hands, two *might* have been exposed to UV in a salon. In addition no other causes were explored. They could have both used the same hand lotion, both have been truck drivers, both have been gardeners, both have been lab technicians etc.
The press has picked up on this and distorted it. The problem is that the doctors and reporters that are making comments on the observation call it a study. It was not a study. It was a doctor that saw two patients that had skin cancer on their hands who "might" have been exposed to a nail UV lamp. The doctors that go on TV obviously know nothing about our industry, but comment on it any way. We know they know nothing about us because the comments they make are ludicrous. Not just inaccurate, but so inaccurate to the point of being comical. We all know that UV causes cancer. What we don't know is if nail UV lamps cause cancer. We do know that visiting a nail salon is about the same UV exposure as a few minutes per day in the sun. We also know that you receive more UV exposure on the trip to the salon then you actually receive at the salon under the UV lamp. UV lamps do add to your total exposure. But the UV exposure from a nail UV lamp could be mitigated by putting your hands in your pockets when you walk from your car into your office every day. There are some people that won't ever get near a UV lamp because of fear of cancer, just like there are people that won't go near the ocean for fear of sharks. Yes both can kill you, but you have a better chance of dying by falling out of your bed then from getting your nails done. Of course that doesn't mean we should all sleep on the floor. It is all about personal risk management and preconceived risk factors. Every major news channel reporting that nail salons are deadly is a gross misrepresentation of our industry and unnecessarily causing alarm. O.K. this is going to anger everyone. Please realize I was trained in Disaster Response by the United State Air force. One of the many types of disasters we respond to is radiation (mostly after crash's). Having said that: Yes UV exposure can and will cause cancer. It depends of length of time and amount of exposure over a period of years. Personally I would never us an UV lamp for any reason. The amount of chemicals and radiation exposure I have been subjected to (even with hazmat suits) of course has been accumulative over the years. Ladies Radiation is accumulative (you don't get rid of it after being exposed - you add after each exposure). Using just the nail UV lamp should not be a problem unless you have used it weekly for a good deal of time (say 5 years). This is very different than say the booth's at tanning salons. The accompanying heat and fans that circulate air around nails help evaporate solvents in the polish, which allows lacquer to harden and cuts drying time in half. But the lights emit UV radiation that’s 95 percent UVA, rays that can cause wrinkles <http://www.everydayhealth.com/skin-and-beauty/ways-to-reduce-wrinkles...>, sunspots, and even skin cancer. One study published in the Archives of Dermatology examined two cases of healthy middle-aged women who developed non-melanoma skin cancer on the backs of their hands and fingers. Neither had a family history of cancer but they did report regular use of UV nail dryers (one twice monthly for 15 years; the other 8 times over the course of a year) which researchers linked to their cancer. “Your hands are close enough to the light to soak up rays <http://www.everydayhealth.com/skin-and-beauty/aging-skin/effects-of-u...> and damage skin. At the very least, the lights can prematurely age your hands. It’s one more risk you don’t have to take,” says Taub. > > >> > -- > >> > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "NailTech" group. > >> > To post to this group, send email to [email protected]. > >> > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected] <nailtech%[email protected]>. > >> > For more options, visit this group athttp://groups.google.com/group/nailtech?hl=en. > > >> -- > >> Lynnette Madden > >> Salon 29 > >> 229 Main Street > >> East Greenville PA 18041 > >> 215-541-9029 > >>http://www.salon29.net > > >> -- > >> You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "NailTech" group. > >> To post to this group, send email to [email protected]. > >> To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected]. > >> For more options, visit this group athttp://groups.google.com/group/nailtech?hl=en. > > > -- > > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "NailTech" group. > > To post to this group, send email to [email protected]. > > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected]. > > For more options, visit this group athttp://groups.google.com/group/nailtech?hl=en. > > -- > Lynnette Madden > Salon 29 > 229 Main Street > East Greenville PA 18041 > 215-541-9029http://www.salon29.net > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "NailTech" group. > To post to this group, send email to [email protected]. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected]. > For more options, visit this group > athttp://groups.google.com/group/nailtech?hl=en.- Hide quoted text - > > - Show quoted text - -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "NailTech" group.
