October 13 2005 newsletter has been posted online. http://www.nancys-kitchen.com/october-13-2005.htm Thought for the Day The best thing to give someone is a chance. ================= Beef Stew ~ Crockpot Style 10 small new potatoes, halved, ( unpeeled ) 12 small whole white onions (, peeled, fresh or frozen, thawed ) Small bag baby carrots, (approx 8 oz ) 1 red or green bell pepper, seeded, cut into 1-inch pieces 1-1/2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch cubes 2 cups beef broth ( canned is fine ) 1/2 teaspoon dried leaf oregano 1/4 teaspoon paprika 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped, or 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes (optional ) 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 3 tablespoons cornstarch 3 tablespoons cold water Place potatoes, onions, and baby carrots in slow cooker. Add bell pepper and beef. In small bowl, combine broth, oregano, paprika, parsley, Worcestershire sauce, Cover and cook on LOW 9 to 10 hrs. Turn pot on HIGH. In small bowl, dissolve cornstarch in water; stir into cooked stew mixture. Cover and cook on HIGH 15 to 20 mins. or until thickened, stirring occasionally. Diane ~ Ellicott City, Maryland === Impossible Bisquick Custard Pie 1/2 Cup sugar 1 tsp vanilla 4 eggs 2 cups of milk 1/2 cup of Bisquick Put all of the above ingredients in a blender except the Bisquick. Blend at low speed for about 1 minute. Add the Bisquick, blend for additional 4 minutes. Pour into a greased large pie pan, like an 11" pie pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, check center with knife. If it comes out clean, it is done. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Ann in TX === Nancy, Our sugar wholesaler announced a 15% price increase today. That may translate to more than a 15% increase in the stores. If you see a good deal in the stores, you might want to stock up. We have been told to expect a 5-10% increase in flour prices. Also, for those who are interested, we have been told that Splenda now has a brown sugar product available in the stores in the Seattle area. It may be available elsewhere.
