Christians from the U.S. think they have come up with something new and for some reason believe that no one has heard of this "Great" idea they are bringing. The Native people of those areas have had their own belief and have worked in harmony with the area for centuries. The Gringo's came in ships and right away began genocide of beliefs and people. Nothing has changed with these Christian groups. They think in one week they will change conditions or start a big movement. After filming they return to the U.S. for donations. Leaving people they "converted" to the life they had, only being outcast and wondering where is this new easy life.
I have traveled and worked all over Central America for a few years and from time to time I run into a group from the states wide eyed and pipe dreams. Now, they truly believe what they are saying at least they have convinced themselves of this. The Militia groups are reflection of what the poor have turned to. Rich are richer and poor are poorer that's the way it is in the States and that is the way it is there. Your friend William should perhaps move to work WITH the local Gov't and the Militia group in charge of the area. Christians that go on these trips forget they are NOT in charge of anything. Think about it, he's not really needed so, the best he can do is fit in. Taking a tired story to people who are tired isn't going to work any more.
Christian groups from Europe did it in North America and continue to do it today. Slowly Native people of North America are rediscovering their true beliefs while finding new ways to adjust through today's needs. Understanding that ideas that at one time controlled people through a threat, Dragons would come and breath fire is plain out goofy unless you are European.
Here are three rules for the Gringo traveler in Latin America:
1 If you act like and Ass someone will kick it.
2 The Man with the gun is in charge.
3 Your flight is leaving in a day or two.
I do wish your people a safe stay and return. Just try to remember your friends are visiting and will always be outsiders. With international laws and lack of fire power letters are not going to change a thing.
