Using Ubuntu Jaunty repackaged into Crunchbang, I had a lot of trouble with 
gpsd and had to remove gpsd, replacing it with 2.91 from Debian sid.
Then I got things to happen

Next, edit the centre of the map from the place in Germany to somewhere closer 
to home, remove the old center.txt from ~/.navit
and restart
