I think Android apps run on their custom VM which is coded to with java. I have no idea if you can write apps that don't use their VM.
I heard Iphone should be relativeny "mac os x" inside. I didn't care much about Iphones until a colegue of mine ported his opengl game dev library that worked on Macs to it and made 2 games already. Android and IPhone use OpenGL ES for graphics I think.
