Thanks for the inputs on this 440 engine. When I acquired this vehicle, it wouldn't even run and had to be towed to my house. They did NOT disconnect the driveline as I had asked them to do, so was surprised when it moved after the overhaul. I made sure to mark all of the vacuum lines and the rest of the paraphenalia as I pulled it down. Both head gaskets were bad(burned thru between the cylinders). I had the heads rebuilt locally and that was when I found out the difference between CAR 440's and RV 440's.(extra ports). Also when I drained the oil, I took out 10 GALLONS!! I didn't know the galleys would hold that much. All milk-white of course. It also has a cross-over installed and no cat converter. Whoever had it b4 also replaced the muffler. As to the carbuerator(sp) problem, I found no vacuum leaks of any sort and made sure the timing was up to snuff b4 I took it out on the road. Also, I had gave the carb a quick-look-over and the bottom of the carb was plugged over with g! as
shellac, so it had sat for a long time b4 I ever got it.I need to tune it for emissions and I can't even find a mechanic who wants to touch it.That is why I thot I would take a try on here to see if it is possible to make do.I just retired and I depend on Uncle Sam for whatever comes every month. No great shakes in THAT paycheck !! lol. Also, I was wondering what kind of gas mileage I should expect to get with this combo and are there better alternatives?(other than parking it).I went to Payson here which is about 95 miles and averaged about 5 mpg.It ran ok but as I say, it seemed to lug on hills. Also I note that on revving it from warmup, it puts out black soot, but doesn't smoke going down the road as far as I could tell. I will try and tune this carb using the glass of water trick but have no specs on it otherwise. As one person suggested, maybe an edelbrock would fix it.Another person suggests fuel pump pressure and that is something I will check as well. Thanks for the help, everyone. Don in Chandler.
