Mistreated is a gentle word, but it is all I can afford and need to
make it run good. Engine is fine otherwise. I have watched this forum
for awhile now, and I figger you guys have most of the answers out
there. thanks for any input! Regards, don.

To my way of thinking the 413 was a better MH engine than the 440. I
have owned both. In 78 there were not a lot of vacuum lines on this
engine but I would carefully check for vacuum leaks as suggested.

I would also check fuel pump pressure and then the jet size for your
elevation. You may need an electric fuel pump located near the gas
tank feeding the mechinical pump up front to get enough fuel at full
power. You can bump the timming from 1 to 2 degrees per 1000 foot of
elevation without hurting any thing and will get more power.

If I were to replace the carb I would look for a Holly 650 to 850 cfm
double pumper with external floats adjustments. The thermoflood carb
has pheonolic (sp) resin float bowels and maybe even floats the fail
over time.

Another trick is to put duel exhaust on it with a cross over pipe to
reduce back pressure. I ran glass packs and then strights for a while
just to listen to the rumble.

GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY
