Steelers Are Strong All Around
Most of the attention has gone to rookie quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, but
the Pittsburgh
Steelers showed Sunday in a 19-14 triumph at Cincinnati why they
are perhaps the NFL's best all-around team. They'll take an
eight-game winning streak and a 9-1 record into Sunday's game
against the Washington Redskins at Heinz Field.
Against the Bengals, Roethlisberger looked like a rookie for the first time in
his eight NFL
starts. He was confused at times by what the Cincinnati defense
was doing, and he was sacked seven times and lost a fumble. The
Steelers managed only three points in four first-half trips
inside the Cincinnati 20-yard line and the Bengals led at
halftime, 14-10.
But the Steelers won because of their powerful running game and the league's
top-ranked defense.
Jerome Bettis had his third straight 100-yard rushing
performance filling in at tailback for the injured Duce Staley.
Bettis has run for 381 yards on 91 carries in those three games,
his most carries in a three-game stretch since 1997. It has been
quite a showing for the 32-year-old, 255-pound battering ram,
whose body looked worn out a few years ago, leading some to
wonder if his career was about to end. Now he's thriving in his
12th NFL season, having gracefully accepted a role as Staley's
backup and taking full advantage when he has gotten the
opportunity to be the focal point of the running game again
because of Staley's hamstring injury.
Bettis had 129 yards on 29 carries against the Bengals and passed Tony Dorsett
for fifth place
on the league's career rushing list (New York Jets tailback
Curtis Martin also passed Dorsett on Sunday, pushing the former
Dallas Cowboys star to seventh).
Linebacker James Farrior had an interception return for a touchdown in the
second quarter
and then the Steelers shut out the Bengals in the second half,
limiting them to two first downs and 42 yards of offense.
Sunday's game against the Redskins will be a meeting of the
league's two highest-ranked defenses, with the Redskins ranked
second.
Staley should be ready to return to the lineup this week after seeking a
second medical opinion
on his injury last week. But the Steelers likely will be without
wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who left Sunday's game with a
strained hamstring and is scheduled to undergo an MRI today, and
linebacker Kendrell Bell, who aggravated a groin injury. Bell
underwent hernia surgery and missed the first seven games of the
season.
Burress has 32 catches for 601 yards and four touchdowns this season. If he's
sidelined for
a few games, Antwaan Randle El would replace him across from
Hines Ward.
It is a sign of how high Roethlisberger has raised the bar for himself that
his outing Sunday
was disappointing. In his eighth NFL start, he completed 15 of
21 passes for 138 yards. He threw a touchdown pass and didn't
have an interception, and had a passer rating of 104.9. He
remains undefeated as a starter. But now that he is a league
most valuable player candidate,
more is expected.
The Steelers are 9-1 for the first time since 1978, when they won their third
Super Bowl in
five seasons. It seems like a long time ago now that Bill
Cowher's long-term job security was in doubt nearing this
season, his 13th as the team's head coach. The club had waited
longer than usual to extend Cowher's contract, and the Steelers
had failed to reach the playoffs in four of the past six years
after qualifying for the postseason in each of Cowher's first
six
seasons. They went 6-10 last season.
This will be the Redskins' first game at Heinz Field. They have to hope they
fare far better
than they did when they participated in the Steelers' final game
at Three Rivers Stadium on Dec. 16, 2000, when they were
overwhelmed, 24-3, in the second of Terry Robiskie's three games
as the club's interim head coach after the late-season firing of
Norv Turner.
The Steelers have won the teams' last two meetings. The Redskins have not
beaten the Steelers
since 1991.
