As someone who is about to make the second spreader conversion, and as
one that does get to the second reef often enough, I'm very interested
in this thread. I'm expecting to lose the baby stay, though if mast
inversion is an issue I can rig a removable and tension-able
substitute. My understanding of how to tension the mast once I rig the
second spreader is that significant prebend will be placed by the new
diamond wires and this prebend will be right in the area where the head
of the mainsail will be when reefed, so I'm wondering if Martyn's
experience is the result of not carrying much prebend in his mast.
Martyn, what tension are you carrying in your diamond wires, measured
by Loos gauge or by measuring the static bend in your mast when down?
Have others had this inversion experience when deeply reefed?
I'm adding the second spreader precisely to avoid inversion and
noodling on my older Forespar mast, partly because I have spectra
capshrouds and so put up with a little more stretch in that part of the
rig.
