There's two situations: someone doing the dividing, or letting people
categorizing/choose roles for themselves. In the latter case, the
re-choosing of roles is more likely to happen at times that can benefit
the group. In the former, particularly if a manager chooses roles for
his direct-reports, a person may not be "allowed" to re-choose roles
except by finding a new job under another manager.
