Sorry, I was responding to Colin's particular situation, which I perhaps
should not have snipped so heavily. I agree completely that when you can
avoid dividing people, that's better. A quick recap:
I expressed my deep opposition to the Software Factory approach's
alleged division between the smart programmers and the dumb programmers,
because when I see that in practice, it's always a huge mess.
Colin told a story where a division could possibly be looked at as a
smart/dumb distinction, but was really more about people of different
background doing different sorts of work. You can see the full post

I generally agree with him; it sounds like their division of labor, in
which there is mutual respect and no differential in power, works well.
To me, the problem comes in when you introduce a supervisor/minion
distinction like architect/coder. For software development at least,
dividing developers into the smart, creative thinkers and the plodding
doers is harmful to the project and to both sets of people as well.
