I don't think Joel is "categorizing" people as either different skill-sets
or different levels of expertise. People with little expertise who care
improve their levels of expertise.
I think Joel is saying that people who work or think in a way that is not
his way are "dumb," "stupid," or "schlubs."
He could have "classified" them in some descriptive way. But he chose
ridicule. Ridicule is hard to counter. Because, when we hear/see someone
else being ridiculed, we instinctively know we could be next.
It's a form of "terrorism" if I may exagerate for effect.

It occurs to me that it is this division that burns people out more than the
natural differences in ability, apptitude, talent.
For example, someone might be told he didn't have to learn a certain
technology because "Jim is the ADO guy." Or one can't work on a certain
module because that's a "database module" and you're the GUI guy.
Uh oh... it just occurred to me how similar the words "Taylorism" and
"terrorism" are. <giggle>
I think I'll stop now. I'm starting to see the "ridiculousness" in dividing
people.
