Well I did it, I let the excitement of the moment get me and I
bid (and won) an 1873 CC Trade Dollar. If real, I think it's in XF
condition and worth about $400. I bid $177. The seller listed in
in historical items category instead of coins, mentioning he doesn't
know much about it. I haven't paid yet so maybe I still have a chance
to save my hard earned $$. Please help if you can, many thanks! (I
will post this coin photo in the photos section, labeled 1873 Trade
Dollar)
Preliminary research tells me that trade dollars are often
counterfeited. Fake ones have
- lettering that looks rough
- a solid eagle eyeball instead of a hole in the center
- wide spaces between the reeds on the edge of the coin
- two discernible holes separating looped hair in the bun of Liberty's
hair where the metal was removed from the die
- dull steel white finish instead of milky white like the originals
It's so difficult for me looking at the photos to tell whether this
coin has the 'fake' characteristics. Any trade dollar experts out
there? My wife is going to give me a lot of grief if I pay for this
and lose a bunch of $$. ;>)
