Hi,
I have quite a few Trade Dollars which are in fact all
originals with the exception of about ten of them
which I bought knowing that they were counterfeits in
order to gain some insight into the flaws.
I looked at your pictures and at first glance, it may
be the camera used to take the pictures but it seems
that the texture (color) of the coin is incorrect.
You have to remember that these coins are 90% silver
and most will have a whiter color texture but then
there are the ones that have a "Gas Lamp" mixed color
glow to them.
Another thing is that you have assessed this to be an
XF (EF-40) but in my opinion, it is more of a Very
Good (VG-8) and at best a Fine (F-12), which brings it
more in line with what I assume was the sellers
starting price.
You have to watch what these people say in their
descriptions for things like, "gee, I have no idea
what it is worth since I don't collect clamshells" but
they start the bid at the market price.
Now like you have already realized, the Trade Dollars
WERE the most counterfeited coins in the U.S. Lot, by
the Chinese. They are still to this day being
counterfeited and I can buy them by the ton through
people that I know for about $1 apiece. Many of them
would fool even the seasoned collector.
If you have a second chance, take it!!!
