 out in the open (deep) water a tidal wave is only 2 or 3 feet high, 
but its period can be a mile long or more

 its only in the shallow water that the front of the tidal wave 
starts to stand up and hits the coast

 BTW, its not the inital wave that hits the coast that causes all the 
destruction. The water level of the ocean raises up ten or 20 feet 
behind that first wave- so the water comes in, and it doesnt go back 
out again.
