Buyers of new boats will be upsidedown on a 15 year loan for about 5
years. After that the boat depreciates at the rate of about 5% per
year. Rigging is usually replaced on yachts after 10 years, but Ian
recommends 3 since he assumes that you will be raising and lowering
the mast alot. I figure 5 years for the hull rigging and 10 for the
shrouds - I hardly ever raise or lower the mast. Sails should last
5-8 years for cruising or 2-3 for racing if maintained annually.
Engines last 6-8 years, longer if used in fresh water. Most of the
stuff on the trailer except for the frame needs to be replaced every
5 years or so. Figure on spending about 2-5K per year on maintaining
an F31, less on an F24.
I would consider a 5 year loan on a 12 year old boat.
