So you solder, the trimmed leads of the nixie, into one socket, and solder a matching socket on your board. 2 sockets per tube. In the old days, when the DIP was king, we would plug these sockets on the end of our emulator probes. Sometimes two. If you lost a pin, by incorrectly inserting it in the target processor socket, you would just swap out a fresh socket (the one on the probe, not the one on the board).
