Well it certainly won't be a toy due to the 1m glass blade ;-) But
thanks for the hint, I know what you mean. But these have two
"outputs" and I do not know if only connecting one of them will work.

For home-made plasma spheres (which have similar power supply
requirements), many people use television flyback transformers. You
need one without a built-in HV rectifier (you need AC output).
Normally, I'll wind another primary (10-20 turns) on the core and use
a two-transistor blocking oscillator or just any old oscillator and a
power transistor to drive it.
