Yep, it was my bike.
I hadn't thought it through properly and used tubes which did not have
any upper cathode supports.
Within a week of light use 2 cathodes got wrapped around one another,
a few days later another couple of cathodes kissed and didn't let go
of one another.

I prayed the romance would lead to new baby nixies which I could
benefit from, but no such luck.

Your idea of using grommets will help a great deal, as long as the
shock level is low you will probably be fine
