I seem to recall seeing some old Nixie clocks that had a mechanical
time base, but it was a gearmotor and wiper switches, powered by line
voltage (mains voltage).

I've never had much luck fixing old broken wind-up clocks or watches,
so I haven't even considered using this type of mechanism for a nixie
clock.
