I seem to recall seeing some old Nixie clocks that had a mechanical time base, but it was a gearmotor and wiper switches, powered by line voltage (mains voltage).
I've never had much luck fixing old broken wind-up clocks or watches, so I haven't even considered using this type of mechanism for a nixie clock.
