Ian, My research brought me to that same exact driver from TI! TLC5916... but yes, no stock anywhere. BUT there is spotty stock of TLC5917 here and there. Seems to be the same but has short detection? Runs at 3.3v too.. so I save the logic shifter. My other option is a regular 595, or actually the high power versions, something like TPIC6B595.
I'm liking the TI TLC5916/TLC5917 led driver... do you know if there is a pin to pin equivalent from another manufacturer? I'm really trying not to lock myself into one particular manufacturer, especially these days. The ESP32 has been working really well for me on my previous clock project. I agree it is overkill.. but I spent a good deal of time on the clock code and I'd like to continue to use it.
