Ever since I went to the dark side more than 10 years ago (surface mount) I 
vowed I would never come back. No regrets, yet.
I can only think of a few cases where I had to use a large resistor due to 
power (heat) instead of SMT.

I can fit several thousand 0805 resistors into a small plastic box from 
Harbor Freight Tools, and they cost less than a penny each.
