Congratulations!
On the VU meter front, there's a row of switches at the top
of the master section that select what source goes to them. Select
"Monitor".
Yes you can get a longer cable. A piece of 8 conductor, 12
awg speaker cable is probably the easiest thing to source.

1st off, I /believe/ that the color code that I gave you was the
Neotek "standard". However, I haven't seen this written down many
places, so I also believe that whoever hooked up may of these

just made it up as they went along.
2nd, the black/gray is the same as the black/white
3rd, as long as each wire goes to the same terminal at each end

color doesn't really matter. HOWEVER, I think it would be a good idea

Here's an idea: why not build some DB-25 to 1/4" snakes to adapt
the
existing PT cables? That way you don't have to touch the edac end,
and
you will be able to interface with most recording devices, now and
in
the future.
