I would recommend VNC, however. Since a scan session can take sometime and you might want to power off your Windows machine. You cannot do that if you are running an Xserver in your Windows machine (since it would kill the scan, IIRC). It's better, and you need to install less stuff in the Windows machine if you setup a VNC server on the Unix server, connect to it from the Windows machine and then run the scan. If you break the VNC connection the scan still goes ahead and you can reconnect any time to see if the scan has finished.
