That is what happens on my system if I uncheck "use SSL encryption" on my client. It sounds like you have this unchecked or the path to your cacert.pem could be wrong (my cacert.pem path is /opt/nessus/com/nessus/CA/cacert.pem). Just a guess ...

I am able to use the command line options as you specified to start the scan. But I dont see/know any steps to start the GUI access of starting the Nessus Scan as specified in the Demo. Even in the client installation PDF I didnt find any clue/steps to start the Nessus GUI. At present I am able to see "nessusd waiting for incomming connections" message when I give the command "ps -ef | grep nessus" in my Linux machine. I am also able to use the command line options. I have downloaded the GTK client RPM also from the website. But I am not at all sure about how to proceed from now. to install it, it's rpm -ivh <fll in the name of the rpm here> very likely if you go to the directory where you downloaded the Nessus Client rpm and type rpm -ivh NessusClient* you will get it installed. This makes the assumption that you have the right package for your system (rpm is only on redhat and fedora core). I wanted to know exactly the below details, 1. Can I start the Nessus GUI only with the nessus server RPM that I have installed and up and running? no, you need to have the client rpm installed. Please see the instructions above If so how and what are the commands/steps to start the Nessus GUI? once you have it installed, it's "NessusClient" or "/usr/X11R6/bin/NessusClient" 2. If the GTK client RPM is also needed along with the Nessus server RPM then how and what are the commands/steps to start the Nessus GUI? jsut the one command I listed: "NessusClient" or "/usr/X11R6/bin/NessusClient" Kindly help me out as soon as possible. I have already installed the 3.0.5 Nessus server in a linux machine. I wanted to know the following, 1. I need a GUI access in Linux to use the Nessus as shown in the Demo in Nessus website. you don't need it, but it's nice. there is a command line client in /opt/nessus/bin. The demo shows using a GUI client, so to emulate the demo, you will need the GUI. 2. For this, should we need a GTK Client? to emulate the second step of the demo, yes, that is the GTK client. It's the older version of the GTK client, but it should be similar 3. If so, Should this GTK client run in the same machine where the Nessus server is running? It does not need to, but it can. the Demo specifies "localhost" which implies that it is running on the same machine. If you want to emulate the demo exactly, then yes, have the client and the server on the same machine. 4. Kindly guide me the complete steps to install and use the Linus GUI based Nessus access as I didnt get more information from the Documents provided in the Nessus site. I am not sure what step you are at. Can you detail what portions of the installation you have done? Is there something specific that you are not sure you completed as listed in the installation instructions at http://www.nessus.org/documentation/nessus_3.0_installation_guide.pdf ? Whether or not you have the Nessus Client on a seperate machine or on the same machine as the server is a matter of your preference, needs, and resources. I have actually run the server hard enough to cause the client to become slow, but that was scanning a very large number of machines at once. If so let me know where can I get the client installation exe for Linux. Should the client be in the same Nessus Server machine or the Nessus client has to be installed in a separate machine??
