Not really. The best I could do would be to guess, based on previous release experience. Having issued the first pre-release, the immediate effort will be concentrated on fixing assorted bugs - both those already reported (typically affecting several release lines), and any that arise in response to the new 5.3 code. We'll doubtless cycle two or three times with new "pre-release" tarballs. Maybe more, depending on how quickly things stabilise. Once we're basically happy with the state of play, we'll switch to issuing "release candidates", and call for extensive testing on as wide a range of systems as possible. At that point, we won't really be interested in fixing bugs. The aim is to check that there aren't any major problems lurking. As long as "make test" runs correctly, then that's typically OK. Personally, I'd expect the full 5.3 release to appear sometime in December - expecting it in November feels too tight a timescale, and I'd hope we wouldn't let things slip into 2006. That's not impossible, though - a lot depends how things shape up over the next few weeks. If you want to help ensure that 5.3 is released earlier than later, it would be useful if you could give it a whirl on any systems you have access to, and report any problems. Particularly if you have any "unusual" systems (e.g. anything not covered by the SourceForge compile farm).
