Well, Wes' original announcement said:

     this will likely be the last release in the
     5.1.X series.

which certainly matches the general impression I'd got. It
looks as if this has got firmed up a bit in the subsequent
discussion.

I can't put my finger on anything in writing (at least not
immediately), but I seem to remember a suggestion that we
should look at actively supporting two main release lines
(as well as work on the development head).
   The release of 5.2 in Nov04 effectively marked the end
of the 5.0.x line, which had basically stalled anyway - the
previous 5.0.9 release was back in Sep03 (over a year before).

Things aren't quite as clear-cut for the 5.1.x line, but I'd
suggest that the release of 5.3 (in Dec05) should mark the
beginning of the end for that too.  One more release (5.1.4)
and then we close it down.
   That doesn't necessarily mean an immediate halt on *all*
work on such lines, but it seems a sensible approach in
general.  We're spread thin enough as it is!
