RFC 3411 contains the definition of the SnmpEngineID textual
convention which explains the various formats. In a nutshell, an
SnmpEngineID value must be unique in a managed domain. They may be
derived from addresses (e.g. IPv4 addresses or MAC addresses) but you
can also manually assign values. In other words, you like to assign
manually if
a) your say IPv4 or MAC addresses in your managed domain are not
unique (e.g. you are managing boxes behind NATs or you make
creative use of assigning MAC addresses), or
b) your managed devices pickup random addresses dynamically (e.g. IPv4
addresses via DHCP) and you want to ensure that the engine
identification remains unique in your domain or during a
renumbering exercise.
I guess most people do not really care and simply use whatever the
SNMP implementation does to produce a value.
