That sounds suspiciously like the idea of the 'hardware' directory in the
first place.   This was always intended as a location for loading the info
about a particular type of hardware, into a single MIB-independent data
structure (together with a fairly generic API to that information).

How does your proposed "data_access" directory differ from this idea?
