I think I'm beginning to understand.   (perhaps)

My main concern is that description was at a fairly low (implementation)
level, which probably won't make much sense to most people.
I'm trying to think about this at a more abstract level that would be
meaningful to those without an in-depth familiarity with the code structure.

The obvious next question is why this needs to explicitly requested.
If nothing needs a particular feature, why isn't the code for that
feature omitted automatically by default?

Based on it only having been widely available for two months
(5.7 was released on 1st July)
