It seems something strange *is* going on.  The error message is coming from a
default snmpd.

My hands are tied on netsnmp version.  Therefore I think the thing to try now is
a fresh install.  I'll let you know how it goes...

ps.  I set it up so Notes will prompt me when sending mail to an Internet address
    for the format.  We'll see if that changes anything.  I'm not expecting it to.
