I think it's fair to say that the configure mechanism has "just growed" quite a bit over the years, and like most such gradually developed systems, is now far from ideal (if it ever was!) If anyone felt like tackling this tangle and tidying it up a bit, then this is probably definitely worth doing. I don't think any of the core development team would regard ourselves as experts with autoconf. We know enough to keep things working, and avoid some of the more glaring mistakes, but it's not the main area of our expertise. A more knowledgable pair of eyes would definitely be of benefit here. Having said which, I don't think it's realistic to think of addressing this in the 5.2 timeframe. Any significant work on the configure mechanism has the potential to break things big time, and we wouldn't want to risk the 5.2 release process being hit by that. But it's definitely something worth considering for the 5.3 line, if we can find a suitable volunteer....
