Yes - but the internal queries used to retrieve the
information being monitored do use SNMPv3

You need something like:

     createUser  noSuchUser MD5 somejunk
          [ in the file /var/net-snmp/snmpd.conf]

and
     rouser  noSuchUser
     iquerySecName  noSuchUser
           [in the main snmpd.conf file]


It doesn't matter what username you use (as long as this is consistant
across all three entries),  nor what password you specify - this isn't
actually used..
   (Though I'd suggest you use a different junk password!)

No.
SNMP users are completely separate from O/S users.
