I am just currious. Are you saying that if you create your own MIB Tree in an 
official manner, "you will need to request an official number from the IANA 
authority" ? Is it just for safety to avoid collision on a network? can you 
please elaborate on this ? Thanks.

To create your own management tree to query, you will need to request
an official number from the IANA authority, then you will be able to
write whatever MIB tree you want under your enterprise number in the
private branch of the MIB tree. To populate the tree or enable SNMP to
reply with a value to a query, you will then need an agent to
interface with SNMP and the thing (thermometer here) you want to
manage.
