I use free and open licenses in my work because they give me, as a non
professional, a sense of security, and I feel it gives viewers/users
of the work a sense of authority in that I take it seriously enough to
license it.

I am a programmer/artist only in my spare time rather than as a
profession and only on my own terms rather than by being seen as a
professional by peers. Therefore, freeing up my work to be distributed
and modified by others allows it to take on a life of its own, and not
be limited by my uselessness at networking/promoting/inspiring
confidence in my work.

I've always had very limited financial resources, so I naturally
looked for low cost solutions. Free/open software and culture have
greatly enabled me to continue learning. I've always had doubts about
mainstream culture and society, so the ideas and attitudes of
free/open software/culture seemed entirely appropriate and resonant
with my own attitudes and ideas. I hope free culture/society is one
of the ways forward for humans.
