The event is a hack day. This is an application of hacking in the
sense of clever and playful investigation and modification of
resources. The resulting products are called hacks, which in this case
means "a clever product of the application of hacking" in the sense
just given.

There are other meanings for hacking (cracking) and hacks (bodges) and
plenty of criticisms of the hack day idea (some of which are less
overheated than others) but I believe these are the ones at play here.

There's a cultural cachet to hacking at the moment. I think it's seen
as a means of pulling value from thin air for management in an example
of Jemima Puddleduck economics. But hopefully some of its original
transgressive spirit survives in these events and their products.
