This is 6.1 GENERIC kernel on i386.
Tried this on a fairly recent Dell laptop. So I don't think it would be a
matter of lack of VBE support.
I don't know about listing modes, I just put "vesa 1024x768x32" (the native
resolution of this laptop) into my /boot.cfg, i.e like so:
menu=Boot big:vesa 1024x768x32;rndseed /var/db/entropy-file;boot netbsd
menu=Boot normally:rndseed /var/db/entropy-file;boot netbsd
This is i386 as well.
