This doesn't gain much, though -- most of the more "interesting"
fonts used in (X-)Windows-based web design look pretty crap when rendered
as bitmap fonts without antialiasing and comparably low resolution.
We considered doing something like this, and someone took the work of
converting the complete Arial font to bitmap, in various sizes -- results
weren't pretty at all :/
